Bells and Leadpipes

Three construction styles:

Lightweight - lighter braces, thinner gauge brass, perfect lead trumpet
Classic - 60 years of Domenick's work created this original design
Ultra - heavy weight trumpet, heavy gauge brass, receiver, and caps.

Four known bore sizes:

M (.453")
ML (.460")
MLP (.4625"/approx. 11.75mm)
L (.468")

Four bell shapes with up to 6 inch bell:

#1 - C trumpet bell
#1s - smooth taper helps create full spectrum of overtones, dark to bright
#2 - fewer overtones, more diffused, blending sound
#3 - very large bell--dark, wide sound

1s bell
This is the bell that set the standard for all commercial bells to follow. Developed in the 60's by Domenick to meet the demands of studio trumpet players in Los Angeles, it remains the mainstay of the professional commercial trumpet playing community to this day. Its unique bell flare design gives projection, focus and sound quality unsurpassed in the industry. It can be played with any leadpipe and will produce the core, density and sparkle that has been cherished by top professionals for over 40 years.

2 bell
This bell has slightly larger flare than the 1s bell, which gives it a broader core, while still generating that burnished, vibrant Calicchio sound. Warm, yet sizzling, the 2 bell projects to the back seats of any auditorium or theater, with the benefit of blending well in the section. Used by top professionals throughout the years, it can be heard in top showrooms from Las Vegas and Broadway to Monte Carlo and beyond. This bell will offer you lightning-quick response and flexibility that is unique to the Calicchio bell design.

3 bell
This is the largest-flared bell that Calicchio offers. If you like a broad, warm, lush sound surrounding a powerful core and dense timbre, then this is the bell for you. It is used by lead, solo and section players alike, as the sound can be molded to fit any particular need. With the 2 or 3 leadpipes, it can handle the rigors of any lead or show book, but with the 7 or 9 pipe, it takes on a flavor reminiscent of the vintage Meha Bessons and large bore Martin Committee models. Big, warm, luxurious, fluid, and powerful are all words that describe the magic of this bell.

Known leadpipe shapes:

#1: No info
#2: Open venturi, free blowing, brilliant sound
#2s: The #2 leadpipe but with a smaller venturi
#3: More efficient, brighter sound
#4: No info
#5: A little less distinct slotting, with a spread sound similar to the Martin Commitee
#7: Smaller venturi, football shaped taper, warmer sound
#8: No info
#9: Largest lead-pipe, warmest sound
#10: Similar to the #2 with a slighly tighter feel with excellent projection

#2 leadpipe - 0.348" venturi
This is the world-renowned leadpipe - great for any situation. Its unique design provides lightning-quick response with a very open air column. The 2 pipe gives the player the ability to play at any volume with immediate, clean attacks and a large, focused sound.

#3 leadpipe - 0.339", 0.341", and 0.343" venturi options
This leadpipe has the unique quality of being a very efficient, streamlined leadpipe that offers a solid core to your sound and ease of control in all registers. Although it is well-suited to the larger bells, it works well in conjunction with the 1s bell as a slightly more contained alternative to the 2 pipe with a slightly warmer sound.

#5 leadpipe
This pipe has much less distinct slots for those who prefer the feel of the vintage Martin Committee. Similar to the 7, this pipe has resistance earlier in the air column. A very dark and diffused leadpipe, the 5 is very unique!

#7 leadpipe - 0.344" venturi
One of Domenick's original designs, this leadpipe brings more resistance to the front of the horn. The 7 pipe produces a warmer sound with a bit more to blow against. It's a wonderful leadpipe for more intimate situations.

#9 leadpipe - 0.351" venturi
The 9 pipe is our most free-blowing leadpipe. It gives you complete control of the trumpet, but allows you to play at any volume with ease and comfort, while always yielding a broad, gorgeous sound. If you like room to blow, yet still need a sharp, smooth attack, this is the choice.

#10 leadpipe - 0.339" and 0.341" venturi options
The last leadpipe that Domenick developed has a very bright sound with exceptional focus and wonderful projection. Extremely responsive, the 10 pipe is the least-known and most focused, which is well-suited for the loudest playing situations. According to Beverly Music Co., the 10 pipe matches the taper of the vintage King Silver Flair 1055T.

Its strong, rich, focused sound with the well known Calicchio characteristic efficiency and ease of playing lend themselves to the demands of the modern trumpet player. With an open upper register and quick response, it will allow you to either lead a section with its effortless projection, play a solo with a lyrical, haunting sound or sit in the section and blend with any and all you meet. Available in 1s/2M(.453), 1s/2ML(.460) and 1s/2L(.468). ML is the most popular.

It easily fits into all playing situations with its versatility and rich sound from the full low register to the extreme altissimo range. The sound is fat and consistent no matter what octave you're in. It, too, has that distinctive Calicchio sound and ease of playing that makes this model a favorite with all types of players, young and old, pro or amateur. 1sZ/3rL (Light Bronze 1s bell with a 3 reverse leadpipe in Large bore)
This is the newest model offered by the Calicchio company and is the first that was designed by John Duda and his Tulsa team. Still utilizing Domenick's engineering principles, this large bore model features the very efficient reversed #3 leadpipe and the lightweight bronze "Z" bell. Lacking the tubbiness usually associated with a large bore horn, the 1sZ/3rL is the model of efficiency and sizzle. Its streamlined sound and warm projection are unmatched by any other trumpet on the market. Also available in 1sZ/3rM(.453) and 1sZ/3rML(.460).

2/9 (2 Bell with a 9 leadpipe available in all three bore sizes)
The #2 bell has a slightly larger flare than the 1s bell, but still retains the legendary playing characteristics of all Calicchio bells. The rich, full, lush sound has a dense core that is broad yet focused, ideal for any type of playing from the recording studio to the largest live theater. The combination of this bell with the #9 leadpipe is great for playing with a big, full brassy sound that can project very well under all circumstances. Great for both lead and section playing, it's all up to you.

3/9L (3 Bell with a 9 leadpipe in Large bore)
Due to the high demand for this model, the once custom-only configuration is back as a standard offering. The marriage of the large #3 bell and the open #9 leadpipe produces a lovely, full sound with an open air stream, making this a favorite among small band players and soloists alike. Extreme versatility and loads of personality make this a wonderful choice for lead players looking for a wide open horn with lots of character. Frequently referred to as the "Freddie Hubbard" model, it offers the player much more than a mere name can describe. Also available in 3/9M(.453), 3/9ML (.460) and 3/9ML Plus(.4625).

3L/3rL (Lightweight 3 Bell with a 3 Reverse Leadpipe in Large bore)
Another Tulsa Calicchio original now offered as a standard model, this combination gives you maximum efficiency with the broadest, sound imaginable. With that Calicchio sound that covers the spectrum of intense to lyrical, the #3 leadpipe lets you handle any playing situation comfortably and the large, lightweight weight #3 bell lets you sing over a section or blaze thru a solo with ease. You have to try this one to believe it. It's like no other trumpet on the market today. Also available in 3L/3rM(.453) and 3L/3rML(.460).

DT-S1s/3M

Trombone (Slide Trumpet)

The Calicchio Slide Trumpet / Soprano Trombone

This featured Calicchio slide trumpet — officially a member of the soprano trombone family — was created by Domenick in the early 1970s. This slide trumpet emulates the sizzle and projection characteristics of Calicchio's flagship bell, but has a broader, trombone-like lower and middle registers compared to its valved counterpart. The functional lyrical range of the slide trumpet extends from Low F# through High C, but with the right mouthpiece it can produce a solid presence and sparkle through Double High C and beyond.

This slide trumpet comes equipped with a detachable, two-piece 4.25" Calicchio 1s bell in ML Bore (.460") modified to have an enlarged throat and bell flare. The bell is made of yellow brass, while the slide section has (unplated) nickel silver tubing. The mouthpiece receiver accepts standard trumpet mouthpieces, and while there's no equivalent of a leadpipe, the blow is similar in feel to a #9 pipe.

The Calicchio slide trumpet was primarily popularized by Chuck Findley. It's unclear how many slide trumpets were ultimately made by Domenick, and there's no serial number stamped on any component of this instrument.

Trumpet Mouthpieces

Domenick Calicchio was responsible for US patent #2,273,177 related to pitch-modifying mouthpieces (1942), and had a considerable influence on mouthpiece design innovation. Domenick once worked with Burt Herrick before Burt went on to work independently (and eventually with Marcinkiewicz Music Products).

See the Calicchio-Williams site for faithful reproductions and/or innovations on previous Calicchio trumpet mouthpiece designs.
